WPA
After researching the designs used in the mid-1930s in the aftermath of the Great Depression and the formation of the Works Progress Administration, students are directed to create posters influenced by the design styles of the WPA for current events, happenings, places, organizations or subjects in one or more of the following categories: Health and Safety, Cultural Programs, Travel and Tourism, Educational Programs and Community Activities. While the final posters may not necessarily mimic the style of the WPA, the goal is to demomstrate an understanding of vector shapes, color and the use of space. Students may only use up to three colors in their designs, and Live Trace and Live Paint are prohibited.

Type Design
Students new to Illustrator and vector graphics are encouraged to build with existing shapes. Using only letter forms and ignoring any word or letter context, students are given only 60 minutes to create an object, person, animal or scene.
